Learn Country Capitals with Games

Once you have mastered learning all of the countries learning all of the capitals comes easier. Just like all of the other topics of geography, learning the capitals of the different countries is quite possible and be a fun process.

Unlike learning only 50 capitals for 50 states, when you learn the capitals of all of the countries there are nearly 200 capitals to learn. This daunting task can be made fun with a series of geography games. Consider putting together a world puzzle that has the name of every country and their capitals. Additionally, you can practice learning them by quizzing yourself with a piece of paper. Write the names of the countries on one side of the paper and write the names of the capitals on the other side, mix up the order of the capitals and countries so that when you draw a line from a country to its capital it is not a straight line. To make things simpler, do not do all of the countries at once and just focus on one continent at a time, or even just one region of a particular continent at a time. Keep things simple at first make it much easier and more fun to learn.

A great way to remember the capitals of the countries is to make up short phrases and sentences about them. For instance, you remember, "the capital of Mexico, is a city in Mexico or a Mexico City." Another might be something like, for lunch I had Belgium waffles with Brussels sprouts." Making up such things is a game in of itself and is more fun if you are thinking them up with others, such as a teacher or a classmate. Depending on what you associate the countries your phrases may be completely different than others.

Finally, you can use good old fashion flash cards and matching cards. Make flash cards to study the countries and their capitals. You can make small cards, such an index card cut into three parts, for each country and capital you want to study. This would be nearly 400 cards, or about 133 index cards cut in three parts, if you want to make a card for every country. For every country that you want to study, make on card with the name and/or shape of a country and a pair card for said country with its capital. Then turn over the cards you have made and play memory, matching up the country with its capital. Have a list handy of the countries and their capitals to make sure that you have matched the cards correctly. This will ensure that while you play the game, you will be learning the capitals correctly.
